atlasGO, de fitness-app die bomen plant
In 2016 richtte de jonge Brusselse ondernemer in het hart van Silicon Valley in San Francisco de start-up atlasGO op. Nu ontwikkelt die een app waarmee je door te sporten doneert aan verenigingen en ngo’s. Je doet dus aan sport en tegelijk steun je met de hulp van sponsors een doel dat je na aan het hart ligt.
In maart lanceerde Thomas met zijn twee partners een nieuw afgeleid product van zijn mobiele app die dit keer ‘een sportieve activiteit, herbebossing van de planeet en de strijd tegen Covid-19’ combineert. Met de hulp van de partners van het project laat #GO4Trees u lopen terwijl u meewerkt aan de herbebossing van de planeet: 4 gelopen mijl (of 6,4 km) komt overeen met één boom geplant door One Tree Planted, een Noord-Amerikaanse organisatie zonder winstoogmerkt waarmee atlasGO in zee is gegaan.
Tal van wetenschappers hebben recent gewezen op de nauwe band tussen de vernietiging van het milieu, door onder meer ontbossing, en de toename van het aantal gezondheidscrises zoals Covid-19. Met #GO4Trees voegt atlasGO een nieuwe, milieugerelateerde dimensie toe aan zijn activiteiten en vermindert het het risico op pandemieën.
Vorige maand was de eerste uitdaging maar liefst 100.000 bomen in Californië te planten. Thomas Querton stelt dat de leden van de atlasGO-gemeenschap extra geprikkeld worden door zich te heroriënteren op een zaak als herbebossing. Uiteraard mikt hij nog hoger en wil hij nog andere uitdagingen aangaan.
In March of this year, Thomas and his partners launched a new offshoot of their mobile app, which brings together "sporting activity, reforestation and the fight against COVID-19". Thanks to the companies that have partnered with the project, #GO4Trees provides runners the opportunity to participate in the reforestation of the planet: every 4 miles (6.4 km) run equals the planting of one tree by One Tree Planted, a North American non-profit organisation which has partnered with atlasGO.
As many scientists have pointed out recently, there is a strong link between the destruction of the environment, including deforestation, and the multiplication of health crises, such as the recent COVID-19 outbreak. With #GO4Trees, atlasGO has added a new, environmentally conscious dimension to its operations and is helping to reduce the risk of pandemics.
A first challenge was set last month, with the goal of planting no fewer than 100,000 trees in California. According to Thomas Querton, the focus on a cause such as reforestation motivates the members of the atlasGO community even more. He, of course, does not want to stop there and is counting on setting new challenges.
