A fifth title for David Goffin

04/03/2021

By winning the Montpellier tournament, the highest Belgian in the world tennis rankings (14th), has claimed the fifth major title of his career.

He wanted to make people forget the huge disappointment of his early elimination from the Australian Open as quickly as possible. And the Liège native did so in style with a string of consecutive victories, finally claiming his fifth career title in Montpellier (ATP 250).

David Goffin regained his fighting spirit to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 against World No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain. He finally overcame his opponent with his powerful serve and his deadly accurate attacking forehands and solid backhands.

As he explained at the trophy presentation, "I knew I had to play my best tennis if I wanted to win this final. I felt better and better during the match. After losing the first set, I had to stay in the game and raise my level. And that's what I did. I played better and better as the game went on. This was my best match of the week. I'm super proud."

It had been more than three years since the number one Belgian tennis player had won an ATP title. By November 2017, he had managed to climb to 7th place in the world rankings.

At just 30 years of age, our champion is sure to win more great victories in the future!
