Elise Mertens played in her third consecutive doubles final at Wimbledon
Elise Mertens lost the women's doubles final with her Australian partner Storm Hunter. And Belgium's Joran Vliegen, with China's Yifan Xu, also reached the mixed doubles final of the most prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
Elise Mertens (WTA 8 in doubles), a great women's doubles specialist in tennis, and her Australian partner Storm Hunter (WTA 7) made it through to the final at Wimbledon. This was the Belgian's third consecutive final on the grass of London. She won the tournament in 2021 with Su-Wei Hsieh and lost in 2022 with Zhang Shuai.
Although the Belgian-Australian pair were defeated by the Czech Barbora Strýcová and Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh 7-5, 6-4, Elise Mertens can be proud of reaching her fifth Grand Slam final.
Mixed doubles final
Another Belgian performed brilliantly in the mixed doubles at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. After reaching the final with China's Yifan Xu, Joran Vliegen was defeated in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-3) in the final of this prestigious tournament by the pairing of Croatia's Mate Pavić and Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok.
This was the third time in his career that Joran Vliegen had reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament. This year, the Belgian played in the men's doubles final at Roland-Garros with Sander Gillé and in the mixed doubles final, also in Paris, with Norway's Ulrikke Eikeri in 2022.
Six Grand Slam doubles titles to his credit
On the men's side, Olivier Rochus and Xavier Malisse won the French Open in 2004, and on the women's side, Kim Clijsters and Japan's Ai Sugiyama won the French Open and US Open in 2003. Also in women's doubles, Elise Mertens has three Grand Slam titles to her name: the US Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2021 and Wimbledon in 2021.
