Elise Mertens wins her third Grand Slam title at Wimbledon

The Belgian, partnered with Taiwanese player Su-Wei Hsieh, has won the British Grand Slam tennis tournament. Elise Martens once again becomes the world's number one ranked tennis player in doubles.

The Belgian-Taiwanese pair managed to turn around a very difficult situation against the Russians Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina. Having lost the first set 3-6 and down 2-4 in the second, the Belgian and her partner, who until then had been totally outplayed, were able to find the mental resources they needed to get back into the match. After tying the match at one set apiece (7-5 in the second set), the third and decisive set was totally crazy. After saving two match points, they ended up winning 9-7 at the end of a breath-taking 2.5 hour thriller.

Elise Mertens wins her third Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. She had already won the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open, each time with the Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka. She has only been a doubles pair with Su-Wei Hsieh since May.

This victory at the All England Club means that the Limburg native is once again the world number one in the discipline, two months after holding this ranking for a week. She is the 45th player in the history of the WTA to reach the number one doubles ranking in the world, and the second Belgian after Kim Clijsters in 2003.
