Schieve Kolos, the Belgian-Ukrainian beer

16/05/2022

Belgian support for Ukraine has a new symbol - Schieve Kolos, a beer of struggle and hope!

The Senne brewery has been working with Ukrainian brewers from Lviv for several years now. It all started when the Brussels microbrewery attracted the attention of Ukrainians by naming one of its beers after Cossack hero Taras Bulba. A friendship arose between the brewers and in 2016, the Brussels-based brewers even helped to set up their friends' microbrewery in Ukraine, the Pravda Beer Theatre.

Schieve Kolos, the latest result of this collaboration, was to be brewed in Brussels with the help of a Ukrainian brewer. But as the men are currently mobilised, it was a female Ukrainian brewer who arrived in Brussels! This is more than thumbing their nose at war, it is a way to perpetuate Ukrainian culture. In addition to Schieve Kolos, the Pravda brewery has made one of its recipes available to brewers around the world, so that they can make it in solidarity with Ukraine.

But what can you expect when tasting Schieve Kolos? Made from "zagrava", a Ukrainian hop, this beer has herbaceous, spicy and aromatic tones. All the proceeds from the sale will be donated to a humanitarian fund working to feed the refugees who are flocking to Lviv. Whether you are a beer lover or just want to show your support for Ukraine, remember the name Schieve Kolos; it should be available in a few weeks!
