A 425-km mountain bike route along the Belgian Coast

18/11/2021

In addition to water sports and beach fun, you can now enjoy 425 km of mountain bike trails along the Belgian coast, between the Dutch and French borders.

In Belgium alone, you can choose from several hundred routes, spread over all the provinces. In West Flanders, many mountain bike routes along the coast have been opened or renovated in recent years. Today, the Flemish regional sports administration, Sport Vlaanderen, the Westtoer tourist service and coastal municipalities have linked them into one continuous 425-km network. There is something for everyone, from amateur cyclists to experienced athletes. However, more proficient cyclists may immediately be tempted to try out the steep slopes and technical challenges of the new 107-km marathon mountain bike route linking De Panne, Koksijde, Nieuwpoort and Middelkerke. It has not been easy to map out new mountain bike routes with enough off-road kilometres that criss-cross our coastline. This region of the country is densely populated and many areas are inaccessible because of their protected nature.

Despite these constraints, 178 kilometres of off-road routes were added to existing routes.

Such an extensive network when our coastline is only 67 km-long as the crow flies? A challenge completed to the great delight of mountain biking enthusiasts.
