Evenepoel’s third win in San Sebastián

03/08/2023

Remco Evenepoel has shown us again why he is worthy of the world champion’s rainbow jersey by winning the Clásica San Sebastián for the third time in his career.

Remco attacked at 72 kilometres from the finish line and ended up at the head of the race with five other riders. Powerhouse that he is, he kept the tempo up, ensuring that the gap with the bunch remained and grew.

Sometimes even the world champion must fight to win. As he took on the final climb, Pello Bilbao was in his wheel and Remco could just not shake him. It was to be a battle to the finish line and Evenepoel, not known for his sprinting prowess, seemed doomed to second place. He surprised friend and foe by catching Bilbao’s attack and seamlessly overtaking him, winning the race by about a bike’s length.

After the race in the Basque country, the Aero Bullet (as Evenepoel is known) has his scope set on the World Championship in Glasgow, where he will attempt to defend his rainbow jersey. The tough competition in Scotland includes fellow Belgians Wout van Aert and Jasper ‘the Flame of Ham’ Philipsen (Ham, besides a type of meat, is also a town in Limburg).

Following that, he has another jersey to defend: he’s hoping to shoot through the Vuelta a España and finish in the red leader’s jersey for the second year in a row, facing off against Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard.

Long may Remco reign!
