Belgian artist Michel François gets exhibition at Bozar

An exhibition spanning 40 years of Belgian artist Michel François is currently on display at Bozar, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels.

The halls of Bozar will be transformed into “an extension of his studio”, according to the museum.

And what tangled webs he weaves in this extension of his studio! Through various art forms – sculpture, photography, video, painting and installation --, Michel François takes the viewer on an interconnected journey that “shakes up reality, questions it, and time and again breathes new life into its relationship with art.”

While the exhibition spans four decades, the artist is calling his display at Bozar a “retroprospective” as he has created several new works just for the exhibition. That said, he has stated that he constantly reuses his former works of art “by transforming them and exploring other associations.”

That Michel François is a force to be reckoned with can be seen in the fact that he represented Belgium in the 1999 Venice Biennial together with Ann Veronica Janssens.

Did you know that François was born in the Limburg city of Sint-Truiden but “only spent a week there”? He was raised in Brussels and still lives and works there to this day.
