Banks Violette in Charleroi

Charleroi

The museum of art of the province of Hainaut is highlighting the work of American artist Banks Violette.

The artist from Ithaca, NY, is put in the spotlight in Charleroi with around 40 works and installations going as far back as 2005 but going up to 2023. Violette plays with black and white throughout his work – fitting imagery as this exhibition studies contrasts like noise and silence, presence absence and other such counterpoints.

With the title of the exhibition (that is: The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull), it should come as no surprise that Banks Violette draws inspiration from metal culture…you know, heavy metal, thrash metal, that sort of stuff, and he tries to incorporate the aesthetic in his work.

Speaking of metal, did you know that there’s a 20 kilometre hike through Charleroi, the Black Loop, that allows visitors to discover the industrial and mining history of the region? As the weather begins to turn for the better, why not combine the two and explore this city that has more to offer than an airport.
