Decontamination using enzymes

30/04/2020

A Belgian company is offering innovative solutions for decontaminating surfaces from all types of bacteria and viruses.

Realco and its spin-out OneLife, which are located in the Louvain-la-Neuve Science Park and specialise in medical hygiene, are world leaders in their business segment: cleanliness and disinfection. This biotech company is seeing increasing numbers of orders coming in from all over the world. Whether it is in Europe, the United States or Asia, the coronavirus pandemic is only increasing hygiene requirements.  There are indeed blatant public health challenges in the medical and hospital environment as well as in the agri-food industry.

But not all cleaning products are the same when it comes to attacking bacteria and viruses that have developed a formidable defence system, a kind of shell called a biofilm. As George Blackman, CEO of Realco explains, "Regardless of the surface and the complexity of access, the total disintegration of dirt particles is made possible by a patented process and a secret composition of ingredients derived from biotechnology, namely enzymes. These natural proteins break down biofilms into microparticles and act as a catalyst for detergents to then carry out deep disinfection.

This natural, patented process means that Belgium has unique expertise that can contribute effectively to countering the coronavirus pandemic. And in a more ecological way!
