Belgium involved in major new space projects

01/02/2024

Charleroi-based company Sonaca has announced its involvement in two major new aerospace projects.

It sounds like science-fiction in name and concept, but it’s becoming a reality with a Belgian touch: the European Space Agency chose Sonaca to make StarFab, the first automated warehouse in space, come to life.

The goal of such an innovation? To contribute to a sustainable space economy. The thousands of satellites currently orbiting the planet without serving any purpose can thus be recycled and put to good use.

In this project, Sonaca is joining a consortium that was put up as part of the Horizon Europe research programme. The consortium is led by Space Application Services, yet another Belgian company. This one is based in Zaventem. Aerospace seems to be a very Belgian affair indeed!

The two Belgian companies are also teaming up for the design and supply a component of the future lunar space station’s intelligent robotic system that will support spacewalks and all kinds of interesting research and development.

Congratulations to these great minds setting the course of aerospace activity!
