The Brussels-Capital Region is the third wealthiest region in the European Union. According to Eurostat, its gross domestic product (GDP) per capita represents 207% of the EU average.

Only the regions of Inner London in the United Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg do better in Europe. Brussels-Capital is ahead of the regions of Hamburg in Germany, Groningen in the Netherlands, Bratislava in Slovakia, Stockholm in Sweden, Ile de France in France and Prague in the Czech Republic.

In total, seven capital city regions appear in the 10 most prosperous European regions. "However, it should be noted that in some regions, the level of GDP per capita may be greatly influenced by the flow of commuters. Net arrivals of commuters in these regions increase production to a level which could not be achieved by the active resident population alone. The opposite effect is observed in regions where commuters live", specifies Eurostat.
