World Sailing Championships: Emma Plasschaert wins bronze
Emma Plasschaert eindigt derde in het WK zeilen in de klasse Laser Radial (ILCA 6). Daarmee behaalt de Oostendse een derde wereldtitel.
Emma Plasschaert comes third in the Laser Radial World Sailing Championship (ILCA 6 category). It is the third world medal for this resident of Ostend.
The World Sailing Championships were held this year off Kemah (near Houston, Texas). This 51st event featured three categories of Olympic class sailing boats.
In her category, Laser dinghies, the Belgian Emma Plasschaert wanted to maintain her title won last year in Mussanah in the Sultanate of Oman.
In a competition involving three races, the Ostend native was still second in the ranking at the start of the last day of the finals, after giving up her leadership position to the Danish Anne-Marie Rindom. Unfortunately, she dropped one more place in the last round, leaving the silver medal to Maud Jayet from Sweden.
The 29-year-old Emma Plasschaert is a Belgian skipper with an exceptional track record. A gold medallist in the Laser Radial at the 2018 and 2021 World Sailing Championships, she also finished a strong fourth at the 2020 Olympics.
Note that Eline Verstraelen, the other Belgian present at these World Championships, finished in 36th position.
The Belgians are already focusing on Marseille, which will host the 2024 Olympic Games sailing events.
