World champions, European champions, and...

29/08/2019

The successes keep on coming for the Red Lions. After winning the World Championships in India eight months ago, our hockey players have now become European champions.

In the final of the EuroHockey Championship in Antwerp, they beat Spain, the 9th nation in the world, with an incontrovertible score of 5-0. Their coach, Shane McLeod, who has been in charge of the team since 2015, can be proud of their results. Only Germany has achieved the same feat of becoming World Champions then European Champions.

Our hockey players' brilliant record is no coincidence. It is a combination of hard work by both players and staff, not to mention the Hockey Federation. To this should be added an excellent team spirit and a desire to constantly move forwards.

En route to a gold medal in Tokyo... Whatever happens, our Red Lions are encouraging young players, as the Federation registers 3,000 to 5,000 new members every year.  The future is assured. And while there is a definite competitive spirit, "hockey also spreads values such as respect, fair play, tolerance and fun", as Federation President Marc Coudron likes to point out.
