An unforgettable first for the Belgian Cats

11/10/2018

The women's national basketball team really impressed in their first World Cup. The Belgian Cats won a string of matches, reaching a 4th place they could hardly have dared dream of.

The Belgian team had a very successful first World Cup in Spain. After winning their group, the Belgian players beat France (86-65) to earn a semi-final against the United States. They lost this match, despite a strong performance. After being eliminated by the big American favourites in the semi-final (77-93), the Belgian players had to compete in the third-place play-off against Spain on 30 September 2018.

No doubts as a result of all their hard work during the tournament, the Belgian Cats were finally eliminated at the end of a very tight match (67-60).

Belgium stood out as a team as well as individually, with Emma Meesseman selected for the best team in the tournament. The 25-year old Yekaterinburg player was the second-best scorer in the tournament and was also in the team for the last Euros.

After finishing 3rd in the 2017 Euros and now 4th in the World Cup, there is no doubt that Belgian women's basketball has some great times ahead.
