Tennis: Elise Mertens wins her 21st doubles title
Elise Mertens and Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh won the doubles at the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Birmingham, a grass-court event.
On the grass of Birmingham, Great Britain, Elise Mertens, still world No.1 in doubles, and Hsieh, world No.3, won in two sets 6-1, 6-3 against Japan's Miyu Kato (WTA 31) and China's Zhang Shuai (WTA 52). The match lasted 59 minutes.
This was a 21st career doubles title for the Limburg native, and her third this season after the Australian Open and the WTA 1000 Indian Wells tournament.
She was playing in the 33rd final of her career, the third on the Birmingham grass after losing in 2018 with the Dutch player Demi Schuurs, and in 2022 with Shuai.
David Goffin wins the Ilkley Challenger tournament
In the final on the English grass, the Rocourt-born tennis player, 109th in the world and seeded 4, defeated France's Harold Mayot, 125th in the world, in two sets 6-4, 6-2 after 1 hr 21min of play.
David Goffin was playing his 11th Challenger Tour final and added a 9th title to his list of honours, the first on grass and the first since his victory in the inaugural BW Open in Louvain-la-Neuve in January 2023.
The former world no.7 also boasts six titles on the ATP circuit, the last of which came at the ATP 250 in Marrakech in 2022.
