Tennis: Belgium Qualifies for the Billie Jean King Cup Final 8
The Belgian players pulled off a remarkable achievement by defeating the United States team and propelling Belgium into the final stage of this prestigious team tennis competition, which brings together the world’s top nations.
Belgium was certainly not the favourite going into this encounter against the American players. However, backed by their home crowd in Ostend, the Belgians made the upset possible.
In the first two singles matches, Hanne Vandewinkel emerged victorious from her duel against Iva Jovic (7-6, 6-3). Elise Mertens then benefited from the retirement through injury of McCartney Kessler, with the score standing at 7-6, 2-6, 3-3.
In the doubles match, the Americans regained the upper hand. Caty McNally and Nicole Melichar handed a heavy 6-4, 6-2 defeat to the Belgian pair of Magali Kempen and Elise Mertens. The qualification therefore came down to a decisive singles match between Greet Minnen (world No. 149) and Iva Jovic (world No. 16). And the young Belgian defied all expectations. Energised by the Ostend crowd, Greet Minnen produced an outstanding performance to claim one of the most prestigious victories of her career, defeating Iva Jovic in straight sets (7-5, 6-3).
It was a resounding achievement for Belgium against a nation that had reached the final of the competition last year (losing to Italy) and has already won the trophy on eighteen occasions.
For Belgium, this fine victory marks a return to the final stage of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 2022.
Great Britain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Spain, Ukraine and the Czech Republic have also qualified for the Final 8, which will additionally include China, the host nation of the event to be held in Shenzhen from 22 to 27 September.
