Remco Evenepoel takes historical second gold medal

07/08/2024

Belgian phenomenon Remco Evenepoel has achieved the historical feat of winning not one but two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Third in the Tour de France, first in the Olympic time trial, and now first in the Olympic road cycling race. As the Olympics song by Belgian YouTuber Average Rob goes: On met la patate!

The double gold is truly historical: never before has a male cyclist won the time trial and road race in the same Olympic Games.

The Aero Bullet proved once again that he is no match for mere mortals. He showed his hunger, skill, and talent and delivered a masterclass on how to beat a peloton, a chasing group and the race leader to the finish line…from in the saddle!

Remco built up a nice gap, and got low on his bike, speeding towards the Trocadéro and eternal glory. The only thing that could have stopped him from winning gold was a flat tire. That actually happened less than 4 kilometres from the finish, but such was the Small one of Schepdaal’s advantage that he still took the victory, before the approving eyes of his parents, wife and country.

He thanked his Olympic teammates — Jasper Stuyven, Tiesj Benoot and Wout van Aert — and celebrated in the most Belgian way possible: with a portion of frites and a big blob of mayonnaise!

Remco goes down in Belgian history as the greatest Belgian cyclist of his age, and perhaps of all time.
