Nafissatou Thiam, silver pentathlete

07/03/2015

On 7 March 2015, Nafissatou Thiam won the silver medal in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships in Prague. Totalling 4,696 points, she also achieved a new personal record. Aged just 20, the athlete is already a celebrity in the world of Belgian sport.

The medal secured in Prague was a real surprise. Indeed, the competitor's preparation had been somewhat disrupted and she was competing against some formidable athletes.

According to Thiam, this achievement does not change things in terms of the World Athletic Championships in Beijing in the summer of 2015, which is the main event of the season: "I have to stay realistic: I could have performed the same and not won a medal. I have to keep working towards the World Championships so I can get there in better shape than here, even though I was further on than I thought. I hope to get there on top form."

In 2014, in Zurich, Nafissatou Thiam stood third on the podium in the heptathlon. Roger Lespagnard's protégée confirmed her talent, scoring the second best Belgian total in history, behind Tia Hellebaut's Belgian record of 4,866 points.
