Fifth place in the world rankings for the Belgian Cats

02/03/2022

The Belgian women's basketball team has climbed to fifth place in the world rankings established by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). This is the highest ranking ever achieved by Belgium in this sport.

Newly qualified for the Women's Basketball World Cup to be held in Australia between 22 September and 1 October, the Belgian basketball players are climbing a bit higher in the world rankings.

The Belgian Cats owe this fifth place in the world hierarchy to their recent great performances on the international scene. The girls, coached by Valéry Demory, have just secured their qualification for the World Cup by beating the Puerto Ricans and the Russians, and despite a defeat against the Americans, during a qualifying tournament involving the four countries that was held last February in Washington (USA) and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic).

For the second time in a row, the Belgian women's basketball team has qualified for a World Cup held every four years. They finished in a wonderful fourth place in the 2018 event held in Spain. The Cats also finished third at the last EuroBasket 2021 and finished in a strong position in the Tokyo Olympics last summer.

By entering the top 5 in the world, the Belgian national team also becomes the second European nation in a current rankings table led by the United States (823.9 points), followed by Spain (685.7), Australia (678.0), Canada (661.6) and Belgium (651.2).

Congratulations to the players for this best ranking ever achieved by the Belgian women's basketball team!
