Sprinter Delphine Nkansa has secured Belgium’s first unexpected medal at the European Athletics Championships.

On the athletics track in Birmingham, England, Delphine Nkansa got off to a slower start than most of her rivals in the 100m final. She then accelerated strongly to make up ground and draw level with the frontrunners. At the finish line, the 24-year-old Belgian sprinter claimed an excellent third place behind the two pre-race favourites, Britain’s Amy Hunt and Poland’s Ewa Swoboda.
With a time of 11.06 seconds, the young athlete from Sambreville (Province of Hainaut) improved her personal best by one hundredth of a second and now stands just two hundredths shy of the Belgian record (11.04 seconds), held by Kim Gevaert for the past twenty years.
This is the finest achievement of Delphine Nkansa’s young career, following her European 200m title won in 2023 in the Under-23 category.
