David Goffin joins the world's top 10

23/02/2017
On Monday 20 February 2017, David Goffin became the first Belgian tennis player to reach the top 10 in the ATP world rankings. This rank is the result of years of work for the tennis player who hails from Liège. "This ranking is a reflection of my progression, a reward for my hard work, training and discipline." As this year gets underway, Goffin continues his rise to the heights of world tennis.

Following his excellent performance at the Australian Open, where he reached the quarter finals, David Goffin qualified for the final of the ATP 500 in Rotterdam. This qualification guaranteed him a place in the top 10. However, the Belgian number one, the 11th best player in the world and the 3rd seed, was beaten in three sets on Sunday by the French player Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, 14th in the world and 6th seed. The Belgian won the first set relatively easily, but was unable to sustain his advantage.

Despite his defeat, David Goffin can console himself with his 10thplace in the world rankings. He becomes the first Belgian man to reach the top 10 in the ATP rankings. These rankings remain broadly unchanged, with Andy Murray still number one in the world, ahead of Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka. What's more, Goffin's standard of play was commended by everyone in Rotterdam, including the tournament director and former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek. Goffin will fly to Acapulco in a few days for another tournament.
