Belgium wins Quidditch world championship

17/07/2025

No, you’re not dreaming: there is indeed a Quidditch world championship for Muggles and no, again, you’re not dreaming, Belgium can proudly boast that the title is theirs.

Okay, it’s not officially called Quidditch anymore but rather quadball, but you can bet your bottom dollar it’s based on the sport from the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter. While the laws of physics currently still prohibit humans from flying around on broomsticks, PVC sticks suffice for this sport, and instead of the various special balls in Quidditch, a simple volleyball is aimed at a hoop.

Turns out the Belgian Gryffins, as our national team are known, have a real knack for the sport, having taken second and third place in prior years. Well, third time’s a charm.

Adding to the magic is the fact that our Gryffins were playing on home turf: this year’s world championship took place in Tubize, not too far from Brussels.

Would you try your hand at this sport? We’ll certainly be rooting for the Gryffins as the world’s greatest players take on other countries throughout the year, although running around like that would surely leave us (Huffle)puffing.

We’ll show ourselves out.
