Many fans of Belgian cycling are familiar with Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert, known for their skills on both time trial and road bikes. Just as many people should be familiar with Ewoud Vromant, Marvin Odent, and Tim Celen, who showed Alabama and indeed the world that Belgium is also an unmissable force in paracycling.
Let’s start with the gold medal in the T2 category road race. T2 is one of two tricycle classes, where cyclists are less impaired than in the T1 category but still require a tricycle for balance. Tim Celen, who has cerebral palsy, sprinted his way against an American and two British competitors. Expectations were high as he was the reigning world champion, and Celen managed to secure his sixth rainbow jersey in eight years.
In time trialling, Ewoud Vromant earned a bronze medal in the C2 category (which is raced on standard or near-standard bicycles), coming in at just 25 seconds slower than the Frenchman Alexandre Léauté.
And of course, Marvin Odent gifted Belgium another gold medal. In the H3 category, which is raced on handcycles, Odent completed his time trial in 40:54, which was 47 seconds faster than silver medallist Micha Wäfler and a whole minute ahead of Daniel Ulmann, who took home a bronze medal.
Well done to these tremendous Belgian athletes. On to LA!
