The Belgian athletes looking to achieve at the Tokyo Olympics

122 athletes make up the Belgian delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. They have medal hopes across many disciplines at this global event.

All eyes are now on the performances of top athletes from around the world in Japan.

Initially scheduled for 2020, these Games of the 32nd Olympiad of the modern era are finally taking place in 2021 in Tokyo, host city for the second time after the Games of 1964.

While the pandemic remains a major concern for everyone, Belgium is still hoping to see its most illustrious representatives shine in this unprecedented closed-door setting. As Olav Spahl, Belgium's Chef de Mission, said: "The way they have invested themselves over the last few months in the run-up to the Games, despite the particularly difficult circumstances, shows a great deal of confidence, courage, resilience and perseverance."

How many medals will our athletes bring back from these Games, which this year include 33 Olympic sports with 339 events on the programme? Pierre-Olivier Beckers, President of the Belgian Olympic Committee, is optimistic: "We have never prepared the athletes so well, at all levels: the pure performance, the adaptation to Tokyo's climatic conditions where it will be hot and humid, and the mental aspect."
