Ann Wauters can add WNBA title to her trophy cabinet

21/10/2016

After a thrilling final, Ann Wauters and her team, the Los Angeles Sparks, won the WNBA title. She is the first female Belgian basketball player who has won the title in the most well-known American basketball competition.

With a decisive goal three seconds before the game ended, the Los Angeles Sparks won the WNBA finals. In the end, defending champion Minnesota Lynx had to admit defeat with a score of 77-76. The title had a Belgian touch as Ann Wauters, the best female Belgian basketball player ever, played for the Los Angeles Sparks this season. It wasn't Wauters' first American adventure, as she has played for the WNBA All-Star team before and lost the WNBA finals with her team, the San Antonio Silver Stars, in 2008.

For 36-year-old Ann Wauters it is the crowning moment in a fantastic career, which began in 1999 with USV Olympic. Five times she would be named female European player of the year and she also won the title in the EuroLeague five times, the most important basketball competition for women in Europe. Wauters, 1m93 tall, isn't thinking about quitting yet. Immediately after the celebration, she left for Turkey to play at least one more season. The next generation is also ready to get started: in 2017 Emma Meesseman and Julie Allemand will uphold the Belgian legacy in the WNBA.
