10 medals at the Summer Olympics in Munich

24/08/2022

The European Championships ended on a very honourable note for the Belgians who brought back 10 medals; 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.

It's time to take stock at the end of this second edition of the European Championships 2022. As a reminder, this new competition introduced in 2018 is held every four years and only features disciplines from the Olympic programme.

During the last weekend of these competitions, our kayakers won two medals. Women's duo Lize Broekx and Hermien Peters finished second in the 500 m sprint. They were only 2 seconds ahead of the Poles Karolina Naja and Anna Puławska. Shortly before, Artuur Peters (the brother of our silver medallist) won bronze in the 1,000 m distance.

In athletics, on top of Nafissatou Thiam's heptathlon dominance, the Belgian Tornados won a beautiful silver medal. The Belgian men’s 4 × 400 metres relay team, with Kevin Borlée, sporting a bandage on his right thigh following an injury, Alexander Doom, Julien Watrin and Dylan Borlée, won the silver medal. They were preceded by Great Britain, but came ahead of France, after a magnificent race. This is the 16th international medal won by the Belgian Tornados.

Cyclist Tim Merlier from Kortrijk won a bronze medal in the road race, albeit slightly disappointed as he was overtaken in the final sprint by Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen and Frenchman Arnaud Démare.

Finally, let's not forget the  5 Belgian medals obtained at the European track championships (2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze).

A great overall result for Belgium!
