VUB: a one-of-a-kind programme in Belgium

23/03/2022

At the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) will offer Belgium’s first bachelor’s degree in “AI Sciences".

40 years ago, the VUB offered Flanders’ first computer science programme. A year ago, Belgium offered its first bachelor’s degree in maths and data science. And today, it's the turn of this new bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence. With this new BSc (Bachelor of Science) programme in AI, the university seeks to respond to current labour market demands and study the discipline from all angles. This programme will build on the VUB’s long-standing tradition of AI research, which has already seen the creation of continental Europe’s first interdisciplinary AI lab. Since the university is already internationally renowned for its research into AI-related rights and ethics issues, this new bachelor’s degree will pay great attention to these aspects of the course.

This programme is likely to attract a large number of students thanks to its unique mix of subjects like mathematics and information technology, along with human disciplines such as cognition, linguistics, rights, and ethics.

With artificial intelligence becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, this degree is very much future-oriented. You often come into contact with AI without knowing it, whether that’s by using online translation sites, navigation apps, or even your automatic mower.
