Yurii Nesterov, a Belgian emeritus professor from UCLouvain, has been awarded the Carl Friedrich Gauss prize for his work.
The prize is awarded to mathematicians whose work has had an impact far beyond their domain, in business, technology and so on. It’s held every four years at the international conference for mathematicians.
Nesterov’s theories have had practical applications in a number of domains, such as in engineering, finance, and of course the buzzword of this day and age, artificial intelligence...to only name a few. They’ve helped train machine learning models, guide asset allocation and risk minimalization, improve signal processing and so much more.
The Belgian was recognized “for his groundbreaking work on mathematical optimization that provided the theoretical foundation and algorithmic backbone for many numerical and data-driven fields, enabling practical computations that were previously too time-consuming to be feasible."
Thank you, Prof. Nesterov, for showing us we can count on you.
