New English-language bachelor programme in Brussels

31/08/2016

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in cooperation with Universiteit Gent (UGent), has started a new English-language bachelor programme called Bachelor in Social Sciences. This new programme consists of an interdisciplinary combination of sociology, political science and communication sciences.

This bachelor programme is the result of internal investigation at the VUB, exposing a gap in the educational provision in the sense that English-speaking pupils leaving secondary school only have a limited choice of English-language bachelor programmes.

To date there are numerous English-language master programmes in Belgium. At bachelor level the English-language programmes are limited to economic and industry-based training. So that’s where the Bachelor in Social Sciences seeks to make a change.

The interdisciplinary approach enables students to explain certain questions on the basis of sociology, political science and communication sciences. Each year, a new central theme is selected. This year’s theme is the Brexit, a theme the students have to approach from three different angles.

Presently  46 students have been enrolled in this new  programme. The first two years the courses are organized in Brussels. The last year students can choose between Brussels and Ghent.
