Major recognition for the work of Belgian professor Herman Terryn

10/10/2025

Herman Terryn, professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), has been granted the Evans Corrosion Award for his research on the subject.

You could say that this award is like a Nobel prize in the very specific field of research into corrosion, which is a process in which metal is affected by nature, the elements. It’s a complex crockpot of chemistry and physics and Terryn is widely respected as an authority on the matter.

Terryn’s research has helped to better predict when any given metal will decay. He used Artificial Intelligence, because why not, on a large set of data to try to help predict the process. You can already imagine the type of application that this could have in real life.

A valiant act for the good of humanity indeed, and for his efforts, Prof. Terryn can enjoy a lifetime membership of the Institute of Corrosion and – get this – an engraved sword! We certainly hope that this memento does not corrode for a very long time.

Congratulations to yet another Belgian researcher enjoying international recognition for their groundbreaking work.
