Liège scientists develop kit to detect spiking

Engineering students at the University of Liège have developed a kit to detect whether somebody’s drink has been spiked, and they have been rewarded for it.

A night out should always be fun, but it’s always important to stay safe. Five students from Liège’s engineering faculty have developed a test kit that could help with that: if you fear that somebody has put something in your drink, there’s a reliable, low-profile way to test it now.

The test, which has been awarded the Wallonie Entreprendre prize of the so-called Startech competition, works as follows: you dip a strip into your drink and take it out. After two minutes, if one of the three most common spiking drugs are present, part of the strip will change colour.

Thanks to the aforementioned prize, the team will be able to further develop their prototype.

Well done to these five students for this very practical and societally relevant application of their skills.
