Professor Cédric Blanpain has been elected to the Academy of Sciences, Institut de France, in the field of human biology and medical sciences.

The ULB teacher-researcher was elected alongside 15 other new foreign associates. Among these, the researcher from the Laboratory for Stem Cells and Cancer at the Faculty of Medicine of the ULB is the only one from a Belgian university. A specialist in the field of stem cells, he was selected for his research and its contribution to the fight against cancer. In his laboratory, promising new approaches are emerging. One of them helps to understand the tumour characteristics which cause metastasis and resistance to cancer therapies.

Before his election to the Academy of Sciences, Cédric Blanpain had already had an impressive career, studded with numerous awards. In 2020, he received the Francqui-Collen prize, sometimes called the "Belgian Nobel Prize", becoming the 25th researcher from the Brussels University to receive this prize.

Cédric Blanpain will thus join the most eminent specialists, French and foreign, who make up the Assembly of the Academy of Sciences. These academicians, elected for life, have undergone a particularly rigorous election process extending over almost a year. Alongside them, he will conduct research into major scientific issues, both current and future.
