Advanced technology from Ghent University should maximise performance of Belgian cyclists in Paris
The best way to achieve brilliant athletic results is to combine robust fitness, optimal coaching and solid support from top technology. Regarding the latter, a group of researchers from Ghent University have figured out a system that records all relevant data from the cycling track, analyses it with AI and continuously sends it to the coaches, who can immediately respond appropriately.

Traditionally, trainers and sports federations have relied on smart watches and heart rate monitors to get the best out of their athletes. But correctly assessing the abundant information they provide and working with it efficiently is always a very time-consuming task.
After years of research and testing, the Sports Data Science team at Ghent University has come up with the dream solution for track cyclists: a high-tech and comprehensive permanent set-up. Sensors record and measure each cyclist's power output, cadence and heart rate, analyse the data at lightning speed with AI and continuously forward the information to the coaches for appropriate follow-up. That will be supplemented by video footage to monitor riding style and sometimes a visualisation by movement scientists of how to dose energy more effectively. All in all, this technology should raise the expectations of track cyclists in the team pursuit.
So hopeful news for the Olympic Games in Paris. The added bonus is that other sports will have their turn too.
