The Belgian fashion designer Pieter Mulier, inseparable right-hand-man and friend of Raf Simons since 2002, has been appointed as creative director at the prestigious fashion house Alaïa.
Mulier trained as an architect, but he shares the language of creativity with our better-known fellow countryman and fashion designer Raf Simons. In their almost twenty years of collaboration, they have enjoyed success working for some famous brands, including Jil Sander, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein. Even while at Dior, Mulier showed himself to be the perfect link for smooth communication and operation between the sewing workshop and his teacher, Raf Simons.
With his new appointment, Mulier has stepped out of the shadows. The CEO of Alaïa, Myriam Serrano, is convinced that he has the right artistic talents and human qualities to continue the legacy of founder Azzedine Alaïa, who died in 2017. And he has these qualities in abundance: excellent technical expertise, an eye for detail, a sense of timeless beauty, the right balance between innovation and craftsmanship, compassion, intelligence, modesty, tenacity, tactfulness, and many more. Alaïa admired women and tried to emphasise their beauty; Mulier states that he will always consider women as the core of his creations. Alaïa surely has a bright future ahead with Mulier at the helm.
