Roger Van Damme voted best pastry chef in the world

The Dutch chef of the restaurant Het Gebaar in Antwerp has recently snapped up first place in the category of 'Best Pastry Chef' at the 'Best Chef Awards 2017' in Warsaw. It was announced on the culinary website Njam!. The competition awards the 300 best chefs in the world. Roger Van Damme and his restaurant, located in a fairytale building in the Antwerp Herb Garden, is ranked 68th. Alongside pastry, there are prize categories such as Best Female Chef and Rising Star.

‘After a 25 year career, receiving this award is an amazing achievement for my team and myself' said a buoyant Roger Van Damme about his world-class performance. He manages to turn every dessert into a true work of art, each with a concept behind it. With this in mind, he works with artists and architects to raise his creations to an even higher level.

Roger Van Damme now finds himself in very good company with other renowned names in his field. Among the 300 best chefs, there are number of Belgians, including Lionel Rigolet from Comme Chez Soi, Emmanuel Stroobant, chef at Relais & Châteaux in Singapore, Peter Goossens from Hof van Cleve, Christophe Hardiquest from Bon-Bon, Sang Hoon Degeimbre from L'Air du Temps, Gert De Mangeleer of Hertog Jan and Damien Bouchéry of Bouchéry. Nick Bril of The Jane in Antwerp came in 5th place.
