Five Belgian bars in Europe's top ten

The European Best Bar platform has recognised five Belgian venues in its list of Europe's top 10 bars, including two in the top three.

To compile their annual ranking, the European Best Bar experts rate bars “based on their ability to fulfil their purpose: entertainment, atmosphere, social life, interesting customs, local culture and, of course, the quality and choice of drinks”. And once again this year, Belgium features prominently in this ranking. In fact, it is the country with the most entries in the top ten.

Retsins Lucifernum in Bruges takes second place in Europe. Experts describe this bar as a “totally off-the-wall, macabre and out-there in concept. It’s more than a bar – it’s an opportunity to enjoy a unique experience. A quirky atmosphere, superb cocktails and friendly conversation with fellow guests in an intimate setting limited to just 20 people. Simply unmissable!"

Taking third place among Europe’s 100 best bars is the Brussels establishment, La Fleur en Papier Doré, with its medieval décor, featuring “wrought-iron window grilles, solid wood furniture, artworks and weathered trinkets on the walls. It is a unique venue full of character, shielded from the outside world by sheer curtains, creating a clandestine atmosphere that's almost like being in a bunker," according to the jury.

Another Brussels venue takes an impressive fourth place: Goupil Le Fol, situated near the Grand Place. This place is described as “unassuming from the outside: without a large terrace or ostentatious signage, with no hint of what awaits inside. Opening the door instantly feels like stepping into a bunker or a tunnel: a long, windowless space with a low ceiling, where every bare surface is adorned with decorations. Its fruity wines, flavoured with blackcurrant and cognac, are the stars of the show."

Two other Belgian bars also appear in the top 10: t'Brugse Beertje in Bruges and Le Pot au Lait in Liège.
