In a Guardian article listing the best bars in the world, beer café "de Dulle Griet" has been featured alongside hip New York pubs and heavenly Mexican beach bars.

Located at Vrijdagmarkt in Ghent's historical centre, "De Dulle Griet" is a fantastic Flemish bar that boasts the city's largest beer list. You can choose from over 500 different kinds of beer in a magnificent rustic, medieval setting. Most renowned is their "MAX" beer, a fairly strong beer served in a huge 1.2 litre boot-shaped glass, whose fame extends far beyond humble Belgian borders and attracts a lot of tourists. To prevent glasses being broken or stolen by customers, they have to hand over one of their shoes as a deposit. Bar staff then ring a bell and the shoe is suspended in a basket above the bar until the glass is returned.

If you're passing through the area and are fond of out-of-the-ordinary places, don't hesitate to take a break in this bar that's brimming with authenticity to taste the famous Belgian Trappist beers or discover the hidden treasures of other Belgian and foreign breweries.
