Belgian design shines in Milan

15/04/2016

The Milan Furniture Fair, a real mecca for design and furniture, will take place from 14 to 19 April 2016. Among the hundred or so countries represented, Belgium and the Netherlands have caught the attention of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, which noted the importance of these two countries in the area of design in its Tuesday edition.

This transalpine attraction for the North is nothing new, given the collaborations between Belgian designers including Alain Gilles, Alain Berteau, Vincent Van Dutsen and Xavier Lust, and major Italian brands (MDF Italia, Bonaldo, Alessi, Poliform, Mogg, Magis, etc.).  Rising stars or established players, our designers are respected in Italy, and it goes without saying that this latest edition of the Salone del Mobile will be the start of new and exciting collaborations.

To mark this event, the Belgian label Belgium is Design is presenting an exhibition and a communal stand of up-and-coming and promising young designers. The label is associated in particular with the independent magazine DAMN°, which has been dedicated to design, architecture and art for almost 11 years. Belgium is Design will also take part in the collective event “A Matter of Perception: Tradition & Technology” at the Palazzo Litta, the 7th edition of the Belgian presence at Milan, Belgian Matters, which will present the collaboration of 13 Belgian designers and companies from diverse industries intended to create projects and prototypes especially designed for the event and presented for the first time at the Fair.

Additionally, a communal stand of 6 up-and-coming designers will be present at the SaloneSatellite, situated at the Fiera Rho. This will showcase the most important creations of young designers and emerging and promising design studios: Romy Di Donato, Frédérique Ficheroulle, PaulinePlusLuis, Pierre-Emmanuel Vandeputte, Valentin Van Ravestyn and Thien Vo. Their projects aim to be a meditation on the potential of different materials, the re-use of objects, the different ways of creating, and also on shapes, finishes and associated emotions. This new generation of Belgian designers is interested by solid themes and new behaviours which redefine the role of design in our daily lives using a design language which is always authentic.

Since its inauguration in 1961, the Salone internazionale del Mobile di Milano has been the international meeting place for design par excellence, with more than 1,300 exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of visitors from every corner of the world. During the week, the entire city will be buzzing with excitement with the hundred or so events taking place in the “Fuorisalone”, in the city centre. It is a fantastic occasion for all participating countries to present their best ambassadors.
