Two points won for Belgium in the "Soft Power 30" ranking

11/08/2017

Political consultancy and public relations agency Portland Communications has just published the third edition of its annual ranking of the top 30 countries in terms of "soft power". The concept, forged by the American Joseph Nye twenty years ago, determines the capacity of a state to influence others by different means than force. The "Soft Power 30" ranking is based on seven criteria: digital, enterprise, education, culture, engagement, government and polling.

This year, Belgium has gained two places compared to 2016 by reaching the 16th place in the ranking. Good performance in terms of engagement, enterprise and polling are the factors that led to this result. In addition, Belgium maintained its excellent 10th place for the education criterion.

According to Portland Communications, Belgium's greatest strength undoubtedly lies in its hosting of NATO and European Union headquarters. This is even more impactful as the Brexit negotiations begin and the American tutelage within NATO is reduced, forcing the organization to reinvent itself. It is also an opportunity for Belgium to refocus, using its capacity to create compromises and to foster consensus.

Brussels will indeed host a number of crucial talks and meetings in the years to come, and Belgium's power to unite must not be underestimated.
