Three Belgian cities among the happiest in the world

Ranked 30th, 42nd and 54th respectively, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges all earn a place in the “gold” category. The index, compiled by the Happy City Index, goes beyond economic wealth and infrastructure, focusing primarily on cities’ ability to provide a sustainable, fair and fulfilling quality of life for their residents.

This recognition for the three Belgian cities is largely based on their human scale, soft mobility and the balance they strike between dynamism and quality of life. Cycling infrastructure, accessibility and cultural richness all contribute to a daily life that residents consider enjoyable.

At the top of the global ranking are three European cities. Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, takes first place, followed by Helsinki in Finland and Geneva in Switzerland.

While these results highlight the quality of services and the urban environment, some observers regret that the index pays too little attention to citizens’ emotional well-being.

The next challenge for these three cities will be to continue combining attractiveness with well-being.
