A major Belgian breakthrough in surgery thanks to AI

13/03/2025

Belgium is playing a key role in medical innovation by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into hospitals, particularly in operating rooms.

Recently, a major breakthrough was achieved during a surgical operation in Ghent, where an artificial intelligence assisted an operation and answered live technical and clinical questions from more than 200 international experts. The artificial assistant, based on ChatGPT, was able to analyse the various stages of the operation and to recognise the different tissues present in the patient’s body. This world first was developed by the Belgian company Orsi Innotech, in collaboration with an American company.

By integrating AI into surgical practice, healthcare professionals will benefit greatly. The time the surgeons used to spend answering the many questions from the patient and their relatives can now be taken up by AI. This will allow surgeons to devote more time to the patient and reduce the risk of distraction.

This operation was broadcast live and internationally during a congress on robotic surgery in Ghent. Thanks to this live broadcast, all specialised members in the medical sector were able to watch live this groundbreaking event. This major scientific advance is aimed to be a source of transparency and information, both for patients and their families, but also for surgeons and their trainees. Showing that AI, used wisely, can help build beautiful things.

Some details still need to be finalized, the internet connection, for example. This technology relies on a stable internet network. But what if the network fails? The upcoming years will enable to develop solutions.
