Shortly before Ban Ki-moon resigned as UN Secretary General on 31 December 2016, he appointed a panel of 15 independent scientists and experts of various disciplines to draw up the Global Sustainable Development Report 2019.

The scientifically based document is set to examine to what extent the objectives of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 have already been achieved. The political decision-makers can use the document to reinforce their fight again poverty and to integrate the economic, ecological and societal dimensions in the execution of the objectives. A new report is published every four years.

Belgian professor at the Centre de Recherche sur la Terre et le Climat George Lemaître of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) Jean-Pascal van Ypersele is one of the 15 panel members. A valuable recognition for his expertise in climatology and environmental sciences and a great honour for our country.
