Never mind Venice and Amsterdam. The New York Times has spoken: Ghent is a perfectly acceptable alternative.
A picture-perfect city, olden charm, glistening canals, the dolce vita…in other words, a dream destination. We’re of course referring to the world-famous city of Ghent. The New York Times asked the age-old question, where is one to go for the charm of the Amsterdam canals and the Venetian gondolas, without the millions upon millions of tourists? The East-Flemish hub is one of six “stunning” (we’re quoting NYT here) cities around Europe.
It has all the charm associated with Bruges, plenty of centuries-old architecture and landmarks, and at the same time, the Times points out, it’s a surprisingly modern city. Need we repeat, for example, that it’s a thoroughly blossoming tech city, or the fact that it’s among the happiest cities in the world?
