The Commission has just published the third edition of the Competitiveness Index for 263 European "regions". It considers that "regional competitiveness is the ability of a region to offer an attractive and sustainable environment for firms and residents to live and work".

Brussels, which includes the two Brabant provinces, received the best score in Belgium, finishing in 19th place in Europe. The aggregation of a large city with its surrounding regions is a system Europe also applied to other cities including Vienna, Prague, London and Berlin.
The Commission's report and the classification of the different regions show, for Western Europe at least, the importance of very dynamic capital and metropolitan regions in stimulating competitiveness.
