Belgium is 17th best country on the Social Progress Index

Belgium ranks 17th on the Social Progress Index, created by Social Progress Imperative (SPI), a non-profit organisation who each year makes a list of the best countries to reside.

The SPI ranking is based on three components: basic facilities, wellbeing and opportunities. Belgium scores a respective 94% (13th place), 77% (27th place) and 78% (14th place) in these three categories.

In the category 'water and sanitation' Belgium ranks among the world's top, at tenth place with a score of 100%. Education is also a showpiece. With a score of 99% Belgium comes 11th in education. In the category 'communication and information' Belgium is at number 12, with a score of 90%. Belgium is also strong in the areas ‘access to basic knowledge’ (99%) and ‘individual rights’ (86%). Finally, life expectancy is 80.4 years. That puts Belgium into 21st position.

Points to work on include: personal safety, environment and access to higher education.
