Antwerp ranks among the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, and is hoping to attract extra tourists thanks to its excellent reputation in that respect.

For several years now, Antwerp has appeared in the top 10 of the Copenhagenize Index, a biannual list of more than 100 cities from all over the world, ranked on their bicycle friendliness.

The recent construction of over a hundred kilometres of additional cycling paths, the development of an impressive bicycle parking facility under the central station and the immense popularity of the bicycle-sharing project Velo, all contribute to the explanation of Antwerp's success.

The city now hopes that bicycle tourism will become increasingly popular, which would confirm the current trend of travellers craving authentic local experiences.

Nowadays, a bicycle-friendly reputation is seen as a major advantage in a world where many cities suffer from congestion and considerable air pollution. Besides, the use of bikes can only contribute to the wellbeing of citizens.
