Remco the Conqueror: first cyclist to win a race on every continent

Remco Evenepoel’s victory at the Grand Prix Cycliste du Québec earned him a distinction that no cyclist has ever achieved before.

With 71 wins in Europe, 2 in Asia, 2 in South America, 1 in Africa and 1 in Oceania, double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel was close to achieving the unthinkable: winning a professional cycling race on all six continents. On 11 September, in the lead-up to the World Championships in Canada, the short king known as the aero-bullet made that achievement a reality.

Belgium has a long history with cycling, whether it’s through classics like the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, cyclocross during the winter season, or excellent individual performances by Belgians in grand tours. With every generation of the past decades, a Belgian cyclist has played a prominent role on the international scene, like Eddy Merckx, Tom Boonen, Philippe Gilbert, Wout van Aert or Remco Evenepoel – and that’s just to name a few.

Evenepoel is now the poster-boy for Belgian cycling, and who knows what other incredible records are in his future?
