More than 400 historic lifts in Brussels

Did you know? Many buildings in Brussels still house old lifts, symbols of a rich cultural and architectural heritage. An imposing metal shaft, colourful stained-glass windows, wooden doors… it’s hard not to fall for their charm.
If the lift was installed and brought into service before 1958, the odds are it will be listed. Today, more than 800 lifts in Brussels have been listed in an inventory, and 420 have already been recognized as ‘historic’ by obtaining a certificate of historic value. Several criteria are used to assess the possibility of obtaining this certificate: authenticity, rarity, value and the value of the building in which the lift is located. In addition to the pride this certificate represents for the owners of these lifts, it also protects the lift from potential destruction.
However, a refurbishment is necessary. By 31 December 2027, the owners of these historic Brussels lifts will have to propose a modernisation plan to ensure conformity.
