Did you know that the University of Leuven is the oldest university in Belgium?

The University of Leuven was founded in 1425. The French Republic closed it in 1797. In 1816, it resumed its activities, firstly as a public university and from 1836 as a catholic university.

The lack of publications on the University of Leuven means that its history remains largely unknown or is difficult to access. However, we do know that it was the birthplace of Jansenism and throughout the 12th and 13th centuries would remain the bastion of Augustine theology while playing an important role in spreading the Latin language.
